Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! So, what have I discovered this year, and what’s my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most anxiety-inducing elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, this may be a significant worry. On my moving-in day, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I grasp? I learned that taking a chance at the outset of the year is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not entirely ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that being true to oneself is imperative. With such a broad spectrum of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with you.
Another difficulty was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was decidedly a progression from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be taxing on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something isn’t clear, I can nearly assure you others are struggling as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital insight to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referred to taking chances previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find joy alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
