By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I got ready to begin my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing this new adventure was intimidating for someone like me, who had always been shy and introverted. Looking back on the past academic year, I recognize a path marked by personal development, difficulties, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most daunting obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently a significant worry for new university students, and if you’re exploring this as a potential student, it might concern you as well. On my first day moving into my residence, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too intimidated to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships at the university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what have I gleaned? I learned that taking a leap at the start of the year is vital. If you’re not ready or at ease, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being authentic is essential. With such a rich diversity of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can take a toll on your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, there are likely others who share your confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges that students encounter. They relate to us and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral guidance until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary insight is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has illustrated that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and taught me how to have fun despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
