By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Daring to step into the unknown was not familiar territory for my previously timid and reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and for prospective students, it could be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before the semester kicked off, I stayed in my room all day, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the finest friendships at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with others in similar situations. What did I glean? It’s wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with fellow students. Additionally, if you can embrace one thing, let it be your true self. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re destined to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a notable transition from A-levels and an even greater leap between the first and second terms. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in navigating this, one being the realization that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely others don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show compassion and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the available support. You can never have an excess!
In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during my time at university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the assistance from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy in my experiences despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
