Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not a situation my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting components of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be among your greatest concerns. On my initial day settling into my residence, a few days prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t worry! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there is one thing you can be, it’s authentic. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and the university, you are sure to meet like-minded peers.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that emotion, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others are struggling as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking leaps earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance available. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
