Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and unsure about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on the year, I recognize a journey replete with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most overwhelming hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating facets of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day retreating to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet today, I can enthusiastically assert that I have formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was a bit of casual conversation with those in similar circumstances. So, what’s my takeaway? I have come to understand that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is typically the best approach. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I’ve also realized that if there’s one thing to be, it’s to be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others like you.

Another obstacle was managing the academic workload and the level of difficulty of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for one’s confidence; you may observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you there are at least a few others who also don’t get it. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask your peers and the faculty for support!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion for students and keep in touch with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I alluded to taking leaps before – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

In a broader sense, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the multitude of support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never alone, and I’ve discovered how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
