Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging in the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current situation?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just a few days before classes kicked off, I spent the entirety of the day in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can assertively say that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever had here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with brief conversations with others in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s advantageous to take a bold step at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t be concerned! Numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events are available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With the diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like you.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Existing in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are puzzled too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the struggles faced by students. They show empathy towards students and maintain regular communication throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, and I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking bold initiatives – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role gave me the opportunity to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to get acquainted with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the help provided. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be diminished with the assistance options provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy my time while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
