Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Facing the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was building friendships. This is frequently a significant worry for new university students. On my first day in my residence, prior to the commencement of classes, I remained in my room the entire day, too daunted to go out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I’ve established some of the greatest friendships here at the university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. I learned it’s important to take the initiative at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered the importance of being yourself, as you will find like-minded individuals within the diverse student community.

Another difficulty was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a challenging environment can impact your self-esteem; you may feel inferior compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is essential in the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They keep us informed and engaged regarding our issues. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year was winding down, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I took a step forward at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to become acquainted with the staff, a valuable chance. There are many ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway is to make the most of the support available. There’s no such thing as too much!

This year has revealed to me that anxious thoughts about university are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me to enjoy myself even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
