Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting at this moment, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating trials was forging friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be your primary worry. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term beginning, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was striking up conversations with people in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I realized it’s always advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, let it be your true self. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors helped me to navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find yourself puzzled by something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are equally lost. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are amazing. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks at the start; I did take a significant step by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the support available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has illuminated that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources offered by faculty and peers. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to enjoy life alongside challenges such as exams and deadlines.
