Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my once timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most challenging obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Yet today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and activities to help you engage with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be your authentic self. With such a variety of people in the course and university, you’re sure to connect with others like yourself.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel unworthy. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can nearly guarantee others are equally perplexed. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

Generally, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
