Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was well-acquainted with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to step out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I glean? I realized that making an effort at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel ready or comfortable, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the academic load and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase in difficulty from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel a sense of inadequacy. A few things helped me navigate that sensation, one of which being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with something, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They connect with students and sustain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role facilitated my acquaintance with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undeniably one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
