Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was making connections. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, nonetheless, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what have I gleaned? I’ve realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be countless opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist in connecting with others. I’ve also learned that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you are sure to find those who share your mindset.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What supported me through that sentiment was the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are struggling as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to peers and staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize the difficulties students contend with. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I made one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your personal growth! My primary takeaway from this area of university is to make the most of the assistance offered. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased through the myriad support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never isolated and how to enjoy myself amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
