Twelve months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back over the past year, I realize it was a time brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re contemplating this as a future student, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was initiating small conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I learned that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals in the program and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I needed to navigate was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a notable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others grappling with the same confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to take advantage of the support being offered. You can never have too much help!

In conclusion, this year has imparted to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be mitigated with the various support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated to me how to enjoy life despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
