A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more nerve-wracking aspects of initiating university, and if you find yourself reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always advantageous to make a bold move at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be countless ice-breaker activities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insignificant. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that others are also struggling with it. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Reach out for help from your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking bold steps earlier – I seized one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
