Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of embarking on my undergraduate journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into unfamiliar territory was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time rich with personal development, challenges, and immense joy! But what insights did this year provide, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating facets of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it may be a significant concern for you. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and engage with others. Sitting here now, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated from initiating conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaker events and opportunities to connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. There is a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and doubt your capabilities. A few factors helped me navigate that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can almost assure you there are at least a few others who are equally confused. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the outset of the year by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance you have available. You can never have an excess of it!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated by the various support resources accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has shown me how to find joy in conjunction with stressors like exams and deadlines.
