Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering

In October 2022, ten months ago, I was consumed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most challenging obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be a significant worry for you. On the day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet new people. However, today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this institution and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned from this? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, do not worry! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be authentic. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to meet people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me navigate through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something confuses you, I can nearly assure you that there are others feeling the same way. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in the Materials department are fantastic. They are committed to your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding toward students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the academic year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps— I took one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance being offered. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unjustified and can be mitigated through the various support systems available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
