Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. But what have I discovered, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Now, I can affirm that I have forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, commencing with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what has been my takeaway? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events to aid you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is vital. With the diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a significant transition from A-level studies, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can weigh heavily on your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you struggle to grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same position. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out to both peers and staff!
This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to prosper and recognize the challenges students endure. They show understanding and keep continuous communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking chances earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be alleviated through the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
