Authored by Dawson La, Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

Among the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my dormitory, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day secluded in my room due to feeling too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I learned that taking a leap at the commencement of the year is often the best approach. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be myriad opportunities for ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to embody, it is authenticity. There are countless diverse individuals within the program and university; you are certain to find like-minded people.

Another challenge I encountered was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first semester to the second. Being immersed in such an atmosphere isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can nearly assure you that there are at least a handful of others who are just as lost. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are truly exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and engage in consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, yet I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous pathways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being provided. You can never receive too much!

On a broader level, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both in anticipation of and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the multitude of support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy even amidst stressful situations such as exams and deadlines.
