By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of fun! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking dimensions of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days ahead of the semester starting, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, far too daunted to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the most remarkable friends I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, all from engaging in casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I take away from this? It’s always beneficial to take a chance at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or feeling comfortable, don’t stress! Numerous ice-breaker events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With a wide array of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.

Another obstacle was handling the workload and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain ways, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you struggle to comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year. Seek support from both fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to prosper and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are ample opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway regarding this aspect of university is to leverage the available support. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are often ill-founded and can be mitigated through the various support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stresses like exams and deadlines.
