Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my typically shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I see a year abundant in personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons have I taken away from this past year, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This undeniably ranks as one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it may be one of your top worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can assertively declare that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that it’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it’s to be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting doesn’t always boost your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several factors aided me during those times, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is confusing, I can almost promise that there are others who are equally puzzled. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the staff!

This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are fantastic. They truly want you to excel and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and keep in touch with us throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had earlier. I spoke of taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to become acquainted with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most worthwhile actions you can take for yourself! My main insight regarding this facet of university is to make the most of the support you receive. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the numerous support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
