Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt a mix of anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period marked by growth, challenges, and enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university often induces fear, particularly if you are a prospective student. On my first day of moving into my new place, days ahead of the term, I remained in my room all day, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? Taking a chance early in the year is essential. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, that’s perfectly okay! There are numerous ice-breaking activities to assist with making connections. I also discovered that authenticity is crucial. Given the vibrant diversity among peers across the course and the university, you are sure to find your community.

Another obstacle was the intensity and complexity of the workload. The transition from A-levels was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel less competent in comparison to others. A crucial reminder for me was that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the key lesson of the first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out for support from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and understand the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until late in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I stepped out of my comfort zone at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with the faculty, which has proven invaluable. There are many avenues to get acquainted with faculty members, and doing so is among the best actions you can undertake for your well-being! My primary lesson is to embrace the support that’s available. You can never have an excess of assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety surrounding university is often unfounded and can be alleviated through the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m not alone and how to derive enjoyment from the experience despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
