Authored by Dawson La, Master’s in Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Engaging with the unknown was far from the comfort zone of my previously introverted and reserved self. Looking back now, I realize the academic year has been filled with personal development, trials, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and how do I feel now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the scarier aspects of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it may be one of your main worries. On my arrival day, just a few days prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and meet new people. However, reflecting from this point, I can proudly say that I have forged some of the best friendships during my time at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I have realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always the best way to go. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of opportunities and events to help you make connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, let it be your authentic self. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can impact your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies aided me during those times of uncertainty, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you struggle with, I can almost assure you that there are others in the same situation. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are fantastic. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize that students face difficulties. They are sympathetic to our challenges and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding any issues we face. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. As I previously mentioned the importance of taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is invaluable. There are many opportunities to engage with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this part of university life is to make the most of the support available. There’s no such thing as too much help!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the various support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.
