Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was far from what my previously shy and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back, I can see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained from this year, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be at the forefront of your worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Today, however, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what has been my takeaway? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events to facilitate connections with others. I also found that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another difficulty was the increased workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What supported me through that sensation was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that others are as well. Hence, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the initial year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are extraordinary. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t truly utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to build rapport with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My principal lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much of it!
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be eased with the support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
