Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a touch of fear as I geared up to start my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always leaned towards being shy and reserved, jumping into university life felt daunting. Now, reflecting on my inaugural academic year, I recognize a journey rich with personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

A significant hurdle I encountered early on was forming friendships. It’s a common concern for many newcomers, and I was no different. On the day I checked into my accommodation—just days ahead of the semester’s start—I spent the whole day alone in my room, too anxious to reach out to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can sincerely say I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, beginning with a few straightforward conversations with others equally apprehensive. The major lesson? Don’t shy away from making that initial contact. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to help you connect. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

Another considerable transition was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of course materials. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to second term was even more challenging. It’s easy to feel inundated or to compare yourself to those who appear to be managing better. However, one thing that assisted me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having a tough time grasping a concept, likely, others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek help—be it from your classmates or teaching staff. Learning to request support is among the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

In terms of support, the staff in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely prioritize our success and well-being, fostering open communication throughout the year. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later on, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Early in the year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to collaborate closely with staff members. Forming those connections has been immensely gratifying, and I strongly encourage you to get involved however you can. The assistance is available—don’t hesitate to take advantage of it.

All in all, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during the start of university was normal, but often unfounded. With the extensive support accessible from both staff and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to balance academic demands with enjoyment, even during exam periods.

If you’re on the brink of starting your university adventure, understand that it’s completely normal to feel anxious—but also recognize that you will grow, adapt, and carve out your niche. I certainly did.
