Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a significant amount of fear as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As a newcomer in my first year, I was venturing into uncharted territory, and for someone who had always considered themselves rather shy and reserved, it felt like a monumental leap. Now, reflecting on my inaugural academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal growth, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the start was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern as well. I vividly remember my first day in student housing—the term hadn’t officially begun yet, and I spent the entire day holed up in my room, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently state that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have come to feel like a second family to me. How did this happen? It all started with small gestures—saying hi, engaging in light conversation, and reaching out to others who were navigating the same experience. The key takeaway? Make that first move. Even if you’re feeling uncertain, there will be numerous icebreakers and events designed to help you connect with others. And above all, be authentic—Imperial is a melting pot of diverse individuals, and you’re sure to discover your tribe.
Another significant obstacle was getting accustomed to the academic workload and the complexities of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when it seems like others are effortlessly managing it all. However, I discovered that everyone experiences difficulties at some juncture. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. That’s why seeking assistance is vital—whether from classmates or instructors, don’t hesitate to ask for help. It’s one of the essential skills to cultivate in your first year.
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely prioritize students’ well-being and academic achievement, keeping lines of communication open throughout the year. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later on, I wish I had started sooner. Initially, I took a step and became a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with the staff and gain a deeper understanding of the available support systems. There are countless ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My advice? Fully leverage the assistance and resources at your disposal—there’s no such thing as too much support.
In conclusion, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was frequently unfounded. With the backing of peers and staff, those feelings became manageable. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and that it’s entirely possible to relish university life, even amid the stresses of exams and deadlines.
