Title: Reflecting on My Initial Year of Studying Materials Science and Engineering

Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I geared up to embark on my first-year adventure studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat shy and reserved, plunging into such a significant life change felt quite daunting. However, in retrospect, I can assert that this past academic year has been one of tremendous personal growth, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the major challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. For numerous newcomers, this aspect is one of the most intimidating parts of beginning university life. On the day I settled into my accommodation—only a few days before classes commenced—I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, both within my course and beyond. All it required was a little small talk with individuals who were feeling just as new and uncertain as I was.

What lesson did I draw from this? Taking that initial step, even when it feels daunting, is always worthwhile. And if you aren’t quite prepared from the get-go, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous ice-breakers and social events tailored to help you connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that the best thing you can be is yourself. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.

Another significant obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and the intricate nature of the material. The transition from A-levels to university-level study was substantial—and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or to compare yourself to others who appear to be managing more effectively. However, one thing that aided me was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most crucial skills you can foster during your first year.

On the topic of staff, I must commend the support from the Materials department; it has been remarkable. The lecturers and staff genuinely care about our achievements and well-being. They are aware of the hurdles we encounter and are always ready to listen to our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I wish I had reached out sooner. Early on, I decided to step up and become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to cultivate strong connections with staff members. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway here? Take full advantage of the support offered—you can never have too much assistance.

Overall, this year has enlightened me that the anxiety I experienced before and during the university’s onset was natural, but often unwarranted. There is a vast amount of support accessible, both from fellow students and staff. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between hard work and enjoyment—even during stressful periods like exams and deadlines.

As I look forward, I feel increasingly confident and eager about what lies ahead. If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university journey, know that feeling nervous is completely normal—but also understand that you will grow, adapt, and flourish in ways you never thought possible.
