Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, uncertainty, and a touch of fear as I readied myself to embark on my journey as a first-year student in the Materials Science and Engineering MEng programme at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been rather reserved and shy, plunging into university life felt quite intimidating. Yet now, reflecting on my initial academic year, I see a period rich with growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the most significant and daunting hurdles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you’re a future student, this might be a concern of yours as well. I recall spending my first day in student accommodations tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. But fast forward to today, and I can sincerely say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced—individuals who feel like family. What shifted? It all began with casual conversations and the openness to connect with others who were equally new and unsure as I was. My key takeaway: take that initial leap. Even if confidence eludes you, there are countless icebreaker events and chances to meet people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse cohort, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
Another significant transition was the academic workload and the considerable jump in rigor from A-levels. The shift from the first to the second term was especially intense. It’s easy to feel inundated or to compare your progress with those who seem to be managing better. However, one revelation that aided me was understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding a topic difficult, chances are others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is likely one of the most vital skills you can cultivate during your freshman year.
Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely care about our well-being and academic achievements, and they keep communication channels open throughout the year. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain a deeper understanding of the support mechanisms in place. If you have a chance to participate in similar roles or initiatives, I highly endorse it—it’s an excellent way to forge connections and enhance your university experience.
Ultimately, this year has shown me that much of the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was often baseless. With the support of my peers and staff, I realized that I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines while savoring moments of joy and personal development.
