**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding what lay ahead. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new stage of my life felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize a period of significant personal development, challenges, and, above all, enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Making Connections: Conquering the First Major Hurdle
One of the most intimidating aspects of initiating university life was the task of making connections. If you’re a prospective student pondering this, you might be experiencing the same feelings. On my inaugural day of moving into student housing, a few days prior to the term officially starting, I spent the entire day hidden in my room, too daunted to go out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations and reaching out to individuals who were feeling just as I was.
So, what insights did I gain? I realized that taking that first leap of faith is essential. Even if you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, rest assured—there will be numerous ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a diverse array of people in the course and university, you’re sure to find friends who genuinely connect with you.
### Facing the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course materials. The transition from A-levels was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more intense. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving. However, one revelation that aided me was the understanding that everyone shares this experience. If you are struggling with a concept, chances are, others are facing the same difficulties. Therefore, do not hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson I learned in my first year—reach out to your classmates and faculty when you require help.
### The Value of Support from Faculty
Regarding faculty, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and fully understand the challenges that students encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing assistance. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, and I wish I had tapped into it sooner.
At the start of the year, I decided to take a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This role enabled me to build connections with the staff, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with faculty, and I highly endorse seizing these opportunities. My main takeaway here is to capitalize on the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts: Embracing the Experience
In conclusion, this year has illuminated that the anxiety I felt—both before and during my university experience—was largely unfounded. With the myriad support options accessible from both faculty and fellow students, I learned that I am never isolated in this journey. Most importantly, I learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while still relishing the fun and excitement that university life brings.
