Reflecting on October 2022, I recall feeling anxious, unsure, and overwhelmed as I got ready to start my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been rather introverted, plunging into university life appeared intimidating. Now, almost a year later, I can look back at a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the primary hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. Beginning university can be daunting, and if you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. I vividly remember my first day in student accommodation—I was so filled with anxiety that I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which commenced with a little small talk and the bravery to step beyond my comfort zone.
What this experience taught me is both straightforward and impactful: take the leap. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous opportunities—ice-breakers, events, and shared experiences—that can facilitate connections with others. And above all, be yourself. With such a varied student body, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
Another significant transition was adapting to the academic demands. The shift from A-levels to university-level material was considerable, and the move from the first to the second term introduced further challenges. It’s easy to feel disheartened when it seems others are managing everything effortlessly. However, the reality is that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with something, it’s likely that others are, too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—that’s one of the most vital lessons I picked up in my first year. Whether from fellow students or instructors, help is always accessible if you reach out.
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been wonderful. They sincerely care about our success and well-being, and they keep communication open throughout the year. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position provided me the opportunity to foster connections with staff and gain a deeper understanding of the available support frameworks. If you get a chance to participate, I wholeheartedly encourage it—it’s a fantastic way to feel more connected and supported.
All in all, this year has shown me that the fears and uncertainties I had at the beginning were completely normal—but not impossible to overcome. With adequate support and the right mindset, I’ve learned to navigate the highs and lows of university life. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve discovered ways to relish the experience, even during stressful periods like exams and deadlines.
To those poised to embark on their university adventure: take the leap, seek help, and stay true to yourself. You can do this.
