Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a considerable amount of fear. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat shy and introverted, plunging into university life seemed intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I see a journey characterized by personal development, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the most significant and daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset was forming friendships. If you’re a future student, this may also be one of your primary worries. I recall spending my initial day in student housing, retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. However, I can now assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like family. What was the key to this change? It all began with brief conversations and shared experiences. My suggestion: take that initial step, even if it feels uneasy. Numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings are available to facilitate connections with others. And most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.

Another notable challenge was adapting to the academic demands. The shift from A-levels to university study was difficult, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more intense. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to compare yourself with others, leading to feelings of inadequacy. However, one thing that assisted me was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, there’s a good chance others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or your professors. Learning to ask for help is one of the most vital skills you can cultivate in your first year.

On the topic of support, I cannot express enough praise for the staff in the Materials department. They genuinely care for students and are always receptive to feedback and communication. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain a clearer understanding of the resources at hand. Cultivating relationships with your professors and support staff can significantly enhance your university experience.

Overall, this year has revealed to me that the fears and uncertainties I faced at the beginning were often baseless. There is an abundance of support available—from both staff and fellow students—and you are never truly alone. I’ve learned how to juggle academic expectations while enjoying university life, and I’ve gained more confidence in myself along the way.

To anyone getting ready to embark on their university adventure: embrace the challenges, seek support, and don’t hesitate to take that first step. You may be amazed at how far you will progress.
