In October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a good amount of fear as I geared up to embark on my first year studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always felt quite shy and reserved, plunging into university life seemed intimidating. However, now, when I look back at the last ten months, I see a year distinguished by personal development, new challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the most significant hurdles I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. It’s a common concern among new students, and I wasn’t any different. I recall my first day in student housing, where I stayed in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve created some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial—individuals who understand and support me. What made the difference? I took a leap and initiated small conversations with others who shared my nervousness. My key lesson? Be authentic. There’s such a rich community here that you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values. And don’t stress if you’re not ready to dive into socialising right away—there are ample ice-breaking activities and chances to connect with others.

On the academic front, the move from A-levels to university was a significant leap, especially between the first and second terms. At times, the volume of work and the intricacy of the material felt daunting. It’s easy to fall into the comparison trap, feeling like you’re lagging. But here’s what assisted me: recalling that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek help—whether from classmates or the faculty. Learning to request support is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

Regarding support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They truly care about students’ welfare and academic success, maintaining open channels of communication throughout the year. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I wish I had done so earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with staff members and gain a deeper understanding of the support systems in place. Getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is something I strongly recommend—it can significantly enhance your university experience.

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was frequently unwarranted. With the appropriate support and mindset, those fears can be navigated. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and that balancing hard work with enjoyment is achievable, even during exam periods.
