Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, I felt a mix of nerves, uncertainty, and quite a bit of fear as I got ready to embark on my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial. Being naturally shy and reserved, immersing myself in university life felt quite daunting. Looking back on the past academic year, I can assert that it has been a path of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained—and where do I stand now?

One of the most significant and daunting challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this might be a concern for you as well. I recall spending my initial day in student housing secluded in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—individuals I now regard as my second family. It all commenced with a few straightforward conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain. My recommendation? Don’t hesitate to take that initial step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous icebreaker activities and events that can help you meet new people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and values.

Another significant adjustment was the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first to second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel as though you’re falling behind when you observe others working diligently, but it’s essential to remember that everyone is going through similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, chances are others are too. Don’t shy away from seeking assistance—whether it’s from your fellow students or your professors. Learning to seek help is among the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

On the topic of support, I cannot emphasize enough the positive experience I’ve had with the staff in the Materials department. They genuinely prioritize student success and are always receptive to feedback and communication. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out sooner. In the beginning, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This role allowed me to foster relationships with faculty, which proved to be immensely advantageous. There are myriad ways to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much.

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was frequently unfounded. With the backing of staff and fellow students, I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying student life. It’s been a transformative year, and I’m eager to see what the future holds.
