In October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, doubt, and a considerable amount of fear as I got ready to embark on my first year studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Having previously been quite introverted and reserved, the leap into university life felt daunting. Yet, reflecting on the past ten months, I recognize a year rich with personal growth, challenges, and memorable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the most significant and daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be a concern for you as well. I recall my first day in student housing, hiding in my room, too anxious to go out and meet anyone. However, fast forward to now, and I can genuinely say I’ve made some of the most incredible friends I’ve ever known—friends who truly resemble a second family. What made this possible? Initiating small talks with fellow students who were experiencing the same feelings. The essential takeaway is to take that initial step. Even if you’re not entirely at ease, there are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings aimed at fostering connections. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student population, you will inevitably find individuals who align with your interests and principles.

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second semester felt even more pronounced. Occasionally, it was easy to feel as though I was falling behind, particularly when I compared myself to others. However, I quickly understood that everyone encounters difficulties at some point. If you’re feeling lost or lagging, it’s likely that others are experiencing similar challenges. This is precisely why it’s vital to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

On the topic of staff, the backing from the Materials department has been remarkable. The lecturers and personnel genuinely prioritize our success and well-being. They acknowledge the challenges we encounter and maintain open communication throughout the academic year. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later on, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff members and gain a clearer understanding of the support systems in place. If you have the opportunity to engage with your lecturers or take on a similar role, I wholeheartedly recommend it—it greatly enhances your university experience.

In summary, this year has enlightened me that the feelings of anxiety I experienced before starting university were normal, yet often ungrounded. With the broad array of support available—from faculty to fellow students—assistance is always accessible when needed. I’ve come to realize that I am never truly alone, and that it is indeed feasible to relish university life even amidst the challenges of exams and due dates.
