Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, doubts, and quite a bit of apprehension. I was on the verge of starting my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, and the idea of plunging into university life was intimidating—especially for someone like myself, who has always been introverted and reserved. However, reflecting on my first academic year, I can assert with confidence that it’s been a path of personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered at the start was the challenge of making friends. For many newcomers, this aspect can be among the most daunting when beginning university. I recall spending my entire initial day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Yet, fast-forward to now, and I’ve forged deep friendships with individuals who feel like a second family. The secret? Taking that initial step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are plenty of ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to facilitate connections. And the most crucial lesson I’ve learned? Be authentic. With such a varied student demographic, you’re certain to meet people who share your interests and values.
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands. The transition from A-levels to university study was evident—and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated, particularly when it appears that everyone else has everything under control. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, chances are others are experiencing the same. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—from peers, professors, or support staff. Learning to reach out is one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.
On the topic of support, the team in the Materials department has been amazing. They genuinely prioritize our success and well-being, and they are always receptive to feedback and open communication. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Initially, I took a chance and became a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain a better understanding of the support structures in place. Fostering relationships with staff members is something I highly recommend—it can significantly enhance your university experience.
In summary, this year has shown me that many of the fears and worries I had about university were often misplaced. With the appropriate support and mindset, these concerns became manageable. I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated, and it is indeed possible to relish university life despite the stresses of exams and deadlines.
