Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself filled with nerves, uncertainty, and doubt as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat shy and reserved, plunging straight into university life felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting back on my initial academic year, I recognize a period brimming with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the most significant challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. For numerous new students, this can be one of the most daunting aspects of starting university. I recall spending my first day in student housing sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to approach anyone. But fast forward to today, and I can firmly state that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial—individuals who share similar experiences and passions. What benefited me the most was simply initiating small interactions: making casual chit-chat with others who were equally new and uncertain as I was. My recommendation? Take that initial step. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to facilitate connections. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you are sure to find people you resonate with.

Another significant hurdle was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university-level education was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term introduced an even steeper learning curve. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to measure yourself against others and feel like you’re lagging behind. However, one thing that aided me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, the chances are that others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—be it from classmates or lecturers. Learning to ask for help is one of the most valuable abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about our success and overall well-being, and they’re always receptive to our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care available until later in the year, but I wish I had embraced it earlier. Initially, I took a bold step and became a year well-being representative, which allowed me the opportunity to collaborate closely with staff and gain a better grasp of the support frameworks in place. Cultivating relationships with faculty members has been one of the most gratifying elements of my journey, and I encourage others to do likewise. The resources are available—make use of them!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the fears and anxieties I harbored before starting university were often baseless. With the proper support from both faculty and fellow students, those feelings can be managed and surmounted. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and that it’s feasible to relish university life—even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
