Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a considerable amount of fear as I got ready to start my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been rather shy and reserved, the thought of plunging into university life felt daunting. Now, ten months later, I can reflect on a year filled with personal development, academic trials, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the foremost challenges I encountered at the beginning was forming new friendships. It’s a common concern for many freshers, and I was no different. I recall spending my first full day in student housing tucked away in my room, too frightened to go out and introduce myself. But fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known—individuals who feel like family. What made the difference? I took incremental steps, like initiating conversations with others in the same situation. My most significant lesson? Don’t shy away from making that first move. There are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to facilitate connections. And most crucially, be true to yourself—Imperial is brimming with diverse individuals, and you’re sure to find your niche.

Academically, the shift from A-levels to university coursework posed another considerable challenge. The increase in workload was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term was especially steep. It’s easy to feel left behind when you see others studying hard or quickly understanding concepts. However, I discovered that I wasn’t alone—many of my classmates were grappling with the same difficulties. The essential skill was learning to seek help, whether from peers or professors. It’s one of the most important abilities you can cultivate during your first year.

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department has been remarkable. They genuinely prioritize student well-being and are always receptive to suggestions and communication. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and looking back, I regret not doing it sooner. At the start, I took a brave step by becoming a Year Wellbeing Representative, which allowed me to foster connections with faculty members—something I found to be extremely fulfilling. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My recommendation? Leverage the support resources available—you can never have too much assistance.

All in all, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt at the onset was entirely normal—and often exaggerated. With the backing of friends, faculty, and the broader university community, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to navigate academic challenges while still enjoying myself and making the most of my time here.
