Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, I was overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a fair bit of apprehension. For a first-year student like me, stepping into unfamiliar territory was quite intimidating—particularly since I’ve always been somewhat reserved. Now, almost a year later, I reflect on an academic adventure that’s been filled with growth, challenges, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and how far have I come?

One of the primary obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting aspects for new students embarking on their university journey. I still recall my initial day in student accommodation—I spent most of it in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. But fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. These companions have become like a second family. What shifted? I took gradual steps—initiating conversations, joining events, and simply being authentic. This is one of the key lessons I’ve learned: stay true to yourself. With such a diverse mix of students, you’re likely to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values. And if you’re not ready immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous ice-breakers and social events to help you transition.

Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic workload. The leap from A-levels to university-level study was considerable, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to compare ourselves to others who appear to be managing effortlessly. However, one thing that supported me was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, others probably are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help has likely been the most crucial skill I acquired in my first year.

Regarding support, the faculty within the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely prioritize student wellbeing and are always receptive to feedback. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. In the beginning, I took a bold step and became a wellbeing representative for my year group. This position allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain a clearer understanding of the support resources available. Fostering relationships with faculty members has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my university experience, and I’d urge every student to seize those opportunities.

In summary, this year has taught me that the fears and anxieties I harbored before starting university were often unfounded. With the right support and attitude, those feelings can be managed and even transformed into strengths. I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly alone, and that enjoying the university experience is possible—even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
