Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, doubt, and a fair amount of apprehension. I was on the brink of starting my first year in the Materials Science and Engineering program at Imperial College London, and the idea of entering such a fresh and uncharted setting was intimidating—particularly for someone who has always been on the quieter and more reserved side. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I can see how much I’ve evolved. It’s been a journey rich with personal growth, hurdles, and a significant amount of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the most daunting and significant obstacles I encountered early on was forming friendships. If you’re considering becoming a student, this may be something that concerns you too—and I can totally relate. On the day I arrived at my accommodation, just a few days before classes began, I felt so overwhelmed that I spent the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can confidently say I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like a second family. What shifted? I took the plunge and initiated small conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain. That leap made all the difference.

The key takeaway? Don’t shy away from putting yourself out there. Even if you’re feeling unprepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to help you connect with others. And above all, be true to yourself. Imperial boasts a wonderfully diverse community, and you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

Another significant adjustment was managing the academic demands. The transition from A-levels was noticeable, and the shift from the first to the second term brought even greater intensity. It’s easy to feel like you’re lagging or not keeping pace, especially when it appears that everyone else has it all figured out. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, chances are others are facing similar struggles. That’s why seeking assistance is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates or the teaching staff—they’re there to help.

Speaking of assistance, the team in the Materials department has been outstanding. They genuinely prioritize student wellbeing and are always receptive to feedback and communication. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support services until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with them sooner. One of the best choices I made was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff and gain a deeper understanding of the resources available for students. Whether through student roles or informal chats, getting to know your lecturers and tutors is incredibly beneficial.

If there’s one overarching lesson I’ve gleaned from this year, it’s that those feelings of anxiety—whether before starting university or during your time here—are completely normal and often unfounded. With the wide array of support available, both from staff and fellow students, you’re never truly alone. This year has taught me how to balance academic pressures with personal enjoyment, and how to flourish even in challenging situations.

So, to anyone about to embark on their university adventure: take the leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You can do this.
