Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves and uncertainty as I geared up to commence my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been quite shy and reserved, plunging into university life felt daunting. Now, ten months later, I can reflect on a year that has been rich with growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments. So, what have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the most significant challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. It’s a common concern for many newcomers, and I was no different. I recall spending my first day in student housing locked away in my room, too anxious to reach out to anyone. But fast forward to today, and I’ve forged some of the dearest friendships of my life—individuals I now regard as a second family. What transformed? I took small strides, like initiating conversations with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was. My most crucial lesson? Don’t hesitate to make that initial move. Even if confidence eludes you, there are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to facilitate connections. And above all, be your authentic self—Imperial is filled with a diverse community, and you’re sure to find your tribe.

Academically, transitioning from A-levels to university study posed another major challenge. The workload escalated, and the material grew more intricate, particularly from the first to the second term. It’s easy to feel like you’re lagging when you observe others appearing to manage well. However, I came to realize that everyone faces struggles at some point. If you’re feeling bewildered or overwhelmed, chances are others are too. The crucial point is to ask for help—whether from peers or professors. Learning to seek assistance is one of the most valuable skills you can cultivate in your first year.

On the topic of support, the staff in the Department of Materials have been remarkable. They sincerely care about the well-being and achievements of students. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open and were always ready to listen and assist. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. One of the best decisions I made was taking on the role of year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build relationships with staff and gain a deeper insight into the support systems established. If you have the opportunity to engage in similar roles, I highly encourage it—it’s an excellent way to connect with the community and make a meaningful impact.

Overall, this year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced at the beginning was natural, but not insurmountable. With the backing of peers and staff, I’ve learned how to cope with stress, conquer self-doubt, and appreciate the journey—even during exam periods. Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone in this experience.
