Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, doubts, and a significant amount of fear. I was on the verge of starting my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat shy and introverted, plunging into an entirely new atmosphere felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what knowledge have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the most significant and daunting hurdles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may also be one of your primary concerns. I recall my inaugural day in student housing—I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. However, looking at today, I can genuinely state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. My classmates and fellow students have turned into a second family for me. What was beneficial? Simply initiating small conversations with others who were equally new and hesitant. The essential takeaway here: take that initial step. Even if self-assurance is lacking, there are numerous ice-breakers and events aimed at helping you connect with others. And above all, be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to find individuals you resonate with.
Another significant transition was adapting to the academic demands and the escalation in difficulty from A-levels. The shift from the first to the second term was particularly challenging. It’s easy to feel like you’re lagging when you observe others studying rigorously. Yet, I learned that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are, others are as well. Don’t shy away from seeking assistance—be it from your peers or faculty. This is arguably the most valuable skill I acquired in my first year.
Speaking of faculty, the support provided by the Materials department has been exceptional. The lecturers and tutors sincerely care about our achievements and are always receptive to feedback. They comprehend the challenges students encounter and are continually striving to enhance our experience. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year group. This position enabled me to collaborate closely with faculty and gain a deeper understanding of the support systems offered. Cultivating relationships with staff members is something I strongly recommend—it can significantly impact your university experience.
In summary, this year has revealed to me that the fears and apprehensions I held prior to starting university were natural but often baseless. With the appropriate support and mindset, they can be conquered. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that enjoying university life is attainable—even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
