Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, uncertainty, and a hint of fear as I geared up to embark on my first year studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. Beginning university felt akin to plunging into the deep end—something my previously timid and reserved self was not accustomed to. However, reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with growth, challenges, and incredible experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the most daunting and intimidating obstacles I encountered in the beginning was developing friendships. If you are a prospective student, this may be a concern for you as well. I recall my inaugural day in student accommodation—I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with a few straightforward conversations with individuals who were as uncertain as I was. The crucial takeaway? Make that initial move early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings to facilitate connections. And most importantly, be authentic. With such a diverse student community, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

Another significant transition was adjusting to the academic workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial—and the shift from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with confidence. However, one thing that aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—it’s one of the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your classmates, and don’t shy away from engaging with the faculty.

Speaking of faculty, the teaching staff in the Materials department has been exceptional. They genuinely want students to thrive and are very in tune with the challenges we encounter. They keep the lines of communication open throughout the year and are always ready to assist. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started sooner. Early on, I took one courageous step—I became a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with staff, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My recommendation? Take full advantage of the available support—you can never have too much.

All in all, this year has enlightened me to the fact that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was frequently unfounded. With the backing of staff and fellow students, those feelings became manageable. I’ve learned that I am never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to juggle academic pressures with moments of joy and enjoyment.
