### Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been shy and reserved, entering this new chapter felt akin to plunging into the deep end. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most intimidating parts of starting university was building friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my first day in student housing, just before the term kicked off, I spent the entire day in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with confidence that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started by stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with others in similar situations.

So, what has this experience taught me? First, taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet people will come your way. Second, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied student community, you are sure to find like-minded peers.

#### Adapting to Academic Challenges

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the workload and the elevated complexity of the coursework. The shift from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first to second term proved even more difficult. It was easy to feel inundated and question my capabilities, particularly when I witnessed others studying diligently.

Nonetheless, I quickly came to understand that everyone was grappling with similar issues. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were also having difficulties. The most crucial lesson I learned was the importance of seeking help—whether from classmates or professors. Asking for assistance is not a sign of weakness; it’s one of the wisest moves you can make during your first year.

#### The Value of Staff Support

A highlight of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to our feedback and discussions regarding our concerns.

Though I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to build connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance.

#### Concluding Thoughts

Looking back, this past year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. An abundance of support exists, both from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and that it is entirely feasible to balance academic challenges with a fulfilling university life.

If you are about to embark on your own university adventure, my advice is to welcome the challenges, seek support when necessary, and most importantly, relish the experience.
