### Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what was coming. I was about to embark on my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a previously shy and reserved individual, entering this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Connections

One of the primary challenges I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this could be something you’re apprehensive about as well. I recall my first day settling into my accommodation—I was so overwhelmed that I spent the full day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone.

Now, looking back, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were feeling just as I was.

The crucial takeaway? Take that brave step early on. If you feel unprepared, don’t stress—there will be numerous ice-breaker gatherings and chances to meet others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the demanding workload and complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted when surrounded by diligent classmates, but one thing that supported me was recalling that everyone is facing similar struggles.

If you’re having trouble understanding something, it’s likely that others are too. The best course of action is to seek assistance—either from your peers or instructors. Learning to ask for help is among the most essential skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are always receptive to input and conversations regarding any difficulties we encounter. Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not having done so earlier.

At the start of the year, I decided to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to form connections with staff members, which turned out to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your academic experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support that’s available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety and doubts I experienced prior to starting university were largely unwarranted. There is ample support available, both from staff and fellow students, that can help navigate the hurdles of university life. Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and that it’s feasible to balance academic demands with an enjoyable and meaningful student experience.

If you’re on the brink of beginning your own university journey, welcome the challenges, seek help when necessary, and seize every opportunity. You’ve got this!
