### Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at university, and facing the unknown was frightening for someone like me who had traditionally been shy and introverted. Reflecting now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

A significant challenge I encountered at the outset was the task of making friends. If you’re a future student, this could be one of your main concerns too. I can vividly recall my first day settling into student housing—I was so daunted by the thought of introducing myself to strangers that I spent the entire day locked in my room. However, today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I could have imagined.

What helped me? Taking that initial plunge. Even when feeling anxious, there are numerous icebreaker functions and chances to engage with others. Above all, I discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and principles.

#### Adapting to the Academic Challenges

Another significant obstacle was adjusting to the demands and heightened complexity of university-level studies. The leap from A-levels was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. There were instances when I felt inundated, especially when observing my peers studying, leading me to question my abilities.

What helped me navigate through? Acknowledging that I was not alone. If I was struggling with a topic, it was likely that others were too. The most valuable lesson I learned was the importance of asking for assistance—whether from classmates or educators. Seeking help is not a sign of inadequacy but a vital skill for achieving success.

#### The Value of Seeking Assistance

Speaking of support, I cannot commend the Materials Science department staff enough. They genuinely aspire for students to thrive and are consistently receptive to feedback. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, exhibiting compassion and understanding toward our challenges.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later on in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are several avenues to engage with professors and support staff, and I strongly suggest leveraging them. The support is available—don’t hesitate to reach out!

#### Important Lessons from My First Year

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I had prior to starting university were unfounded. There is plenty of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students. Most crucially, I’ve understood that I am never truly alone.

University presents its share of challenges—exams, due dates, and moments of self-doubt—but it also grants remarkable opportunities for development, companionship, and enjoyment. As I look to the future, I feel increasingly confident and eager for what lies ahead.

If you’re about to embark on your university journey, my advice is straightforward: take that plunge, be yourself, and don’t shy away from asking for help. You’re capable of this!
