Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, doubts, and a touch of fear as I got ready to embark on my first year studying Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been somewhat introverted, diving into university life was quite daunting. Yet, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it was filled with growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the most significant and intimidating hurdles I encountered at the beginning was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your primary concerns as well. I recall my first day in student housing—I ended up spending the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert confidently that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with a few straightforward conversations with fellow newcomers who shared my uncertainty. The essential takeaway? Initiate that first contact. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and events tailored to help you engage with others. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

Another significant change was acclimating to the academic demands. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others seemingly managing everything effortlessly. However, here’s what aided me: remembering that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are as well. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—it’s one of the most invaluable skills you can cultivate during your first year. Reach out to your fellow students, and don’t shy away from approaching your lecturers and tutors.

Regarding staff, I can’t express enough positive sentiments about the teaching and support team in the Materials department. They genuinely prioritize our success and well-being, and they’re consistently receptive to feedback and communication. I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I took a bold step and served as a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with your lecturers and support staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university journey. The primary lesson here? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance.

All in all, this year has shown me that the fears and concerns I harbored before starting university were often unfounded. With the appropriate support and mindset, those anxieties can be conquered. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and that it’s entirely possible to relish the university experience—even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
