**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had previously been quite shy and introverted, initiating this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and countless delightful experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the primary hurdles I encountered early on was forging friendships. If you are a prospective student, this concern may also be weighing on your mind. On my inaugural day in student housing, I was so overwhelmed that I remained in my room all day, too apprehensive to introduce myself to anyone. However, fast forward to today, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

Imperial has truly become a second home for me, and it primarily involved stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in light conversation with others in similar situations. My key takeaway? Take that first step. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to socialize. Above all, be yourself. With such a varied student population, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.

### Adapting to Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially when witnessing others studying hard while I felt left behind.

What aided me was realizing that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I was struggling to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were too. The best advice I can share? Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, seeking help is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Seeking Assistance

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely want students to thrive and comprehend the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication with us and offered invaluable guidance.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, and I wish I had accessed it earlier. At the year’s start, I took a courageous step by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which facilitated connections with staff members. Building relationships with your lecturers and tutors can be immensely helpful, and there are many avenues available to do so. My main lesson here? Make the most of the support on offer—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.

### Closing Thoughts

As I reflect on this past year, I’ve come to realize that many of the apprehensions I held before entering university were unwarranted. With solid support from both staff and peers, those initial anxieties swiftly diminished. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone and have figured out how to balance academic demands with savoring university life.

If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: embrace the challenges, seek help when necessary, and above all, relish the experience.
