### Thoughts on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and apprehension about the journey ahead. I was set to commence my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been shy and introverted, embarking on this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself at this moment?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered early on was the challenge of making friends. If you’re a future student, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day at the student residence, I felt so daunted that I remained in my room all day, too anxious to meet anyone. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has truly become my second home, and it all started with stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others in a similar position.
What did I take away from this? Taking that initial step is always worthwhile. If you don’t feel prepared at the beginning, don’t stress—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied student demographic, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was adjusting to the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel doubt when observing others studying diligently while you feel you’re lagging behind.
What aided me during this period? A reminder that we were all experiencing similar challenges. If I was confused about something, it was likely that others were too. One of the best actions I took was seeking assistance—whether from fellow students or the faculty. Learning to seek help is an invaluable skill to cultivate in your first year.
#### The Value of Asking for Help
Regarding support, one of the most comforting elements of my course has been the outstanding staff. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about our success and recognize the hurdles we encounter. They keep open channels of communication with us throughout the year and are consistently eager to assist.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the start of the year, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key insight? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much assistance.
#### Closing Thoughts
Reflecting on the year, I have learned that many of the anxieties I had prior to starting university were unfounded. There is a vast array of support available, both from faculty and fellow students, to help you overcome any obstacles. I’ve discovered that I am never truly alone and that it is feasible to balance academic demands with a fulfilling university experience.
To anyone who is about to embark on their journey at Imperial: seize the opportunities, seek help when necessary, and most importantly, be authentic. You will find your niche, just as I have.
