**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and skepticism about what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted, entering this new chapter felt daunting. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles to overcome, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my position today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most significant obstacles I encountered initially was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your primary worries. On my first day in student housing, I was so daunted by the thought of mingling that I chose to stay in my room the entire day, steering clear of interactions. However, fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.

Imperial has truly become a second home to me, requiring only that I step out of my comfort zone and strike up small conversations with those in similar situations. My major takeaway? Don’t hesitate early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet individuals will be available. Most importantly, be authentic—Imperial boasts a vibrant mix of people, and you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests.

### Navigating the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge was adjusting to the increased workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, with an even sharper learning curve between the first and second terms. At times, I questioned my capabilities, especially observing others engrossed in their studies. It’s easy to feel inadequate, but one thing that assisted me was realizing that everyone experiences similar struggles.

If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are your peers are too. The vital thing is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or teaching staff. Developing the ability to ask for support is one of the most important skills you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Staff Support

One of the most comforting elements of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science department. The faculty genuinely cares about students’ success and is always receptive to feedback. They are aware of the challenges we encounter and maintain open lines of communication to rectify our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early in the year, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members. This decision proved immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the resources at your disposal—there’s no limit to how much support you can engage with.

### Concluding Thoughts

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was largely unfounded. There is a wealth of support available, both from the staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance academic demands with relishing university life.

For anyone gearing up for this journey, my message is straightforward: embrace the hurdles, seek support as necessary, and seize every opportunity. University represents a time of transformation, and with the right perspective, it can be an extraordinarily fulfilling experience.
