**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was inundated with nerves, uncertainty, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the cusp of my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, embarking on this new journey felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the foremost hurdles I encountered was forging new friendships. If you’re a potential student, this might also be a significant worry for you. On my first day at student housing, I felt so apprehensive that I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to introduce myself to anyone. Yet, here I am today, proudly stating that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. Imperial has turned into a second family for me, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating conversations with others in the same boat.
What did I discover? Taking that initial step is invariably rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared at once, don’t be concerned—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adjusting to Academic Rigor
Another significant challenge was getting accustomed to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was considerable, and the leap from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying with confidence. However, I soon recognized that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others face the same issues.
The most important lesson I gleaned? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or professors, asking for help is essential during your first year.
### The Value of Staff Support
Regarding support, the staff within the Materials department are truly remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and are aware of the obstacles we encounter. They foster an environment of open communication throughout the year, ensuring that students feel acknowledged and assisted.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to cultivate relationships with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support—there’s no such thing as too much help.
### Final Thoughts
In hindsight, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before starting university was largely unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in navigating the transition. Most importantly, I’ve learned that I am never alone and that enjoying university life is indeed possible, even amid the stresses of exams and deadlines.
If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, ask for assistance when needed, and fully embrace the experience. You’ll grow in ways you never imagined.
