Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
In October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, uncertainty, and a touch of fear. I was on the verge of commencing my first year in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, and the idea of plunging into university life was intimidating—particularly for someone like me, who has always leaned towards being more introverted. Now, as I look back on the past academic year, I recognize a path filled with development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the foremost initial hurdles was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, you might also be feeling apprehensive about this. I recall my first day in the student accommodation—I spent the entire day within my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have evolved into a second family for me. What contributed to this? Simply taking small steps—engaging in conversations with others who were feeling the same. I discovered that making that initial move, however minor, is worthwhile. And above all, I’ve realized that being authentic is the best approach. With such a varied student population, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
Another significant transition was coping with the academic demands. The leap from A-levels to university-level material was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term presented an even greater challenge. It’s easy to feel inundated or to compare oneself to fellow students. However, one revelation that aided me was the understanding that everyone is navigating their way through this experience collectively. If you’re having difficulty comprehending a topic, others likely are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or instructors. Cultivating the ability to ask for help is one of the most essential skills you can acquire in your first year.
On the subject of support, I cannot praise the staff in the Materials department enough. They genuinely prioritize student well-being and remain receptive to feedback and communication. While I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. Early on, I took the plunge and became a year well-being representative. This role offered me the chance to engage with staff and participate in enhancing the student experience. Establishing those connections with staff has been immensely gratifying, and I would urge anyone to embrace the numerous opportunities to interact with them.
All in all, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt at the outset was a normal reaction—but not a lasting one. With the backing of friends, faculty, and the broader university community, I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone. I’ve also learned how to harmonize the demands of exams and deadlines with enjoyable and relaxing moments. Most importantly, I’ve evolved into a person who is more self-assured, more open, and more enthusiastic about what lies ahead.
