**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months back, in October 2022, I found myself consumed by anxiety, uncertainty, and hesitation regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my first year studying [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted and quiet, embarking on this new adventure felt daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what have I discovered, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Connections

One of the most daunting aspects of beginning university was the prospect of making new friends. If you’re a future student reading this, you may feel a similar trepidation. On my initial day in student housing, I was so anxious that I spent the whole day confined to my room, too apprehensive to reach out to others. However, fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

Imperial has truly become a second home, and the key was stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were in a similar boat. My greatest insight? Take that plunge early on. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and opportunities to socialize. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands

The shift from A-levels to university marked a significant leap, and the academic workload only escalated as the year unfolded. There were times I questioned my abilities, particularly when observing others engrossed in their studies while I felt like I was lagging behind. Yet, I quickly recognized that I wasn’t isolated—many of my classmates were facing similar obstacles.

What’s the best piece of advice I can share? Don’t hesitate to seek help. Whether it’s from fellow students or lecturers, reaching out for assistance is vital. Everyone is navigating the same challenges, and there’s no disgrace in admitting confusion. Learning to seek help was one of the most important lessons I gained during my first year.

### Encouragement from Faculty and Well-being Programs

One of the standout aspects of my journey has been the remarkable support from the Materials Science department. The staff genuinely care about student success and are always receptive to constructive feedback. They understand the hurdles we encounter and proactively endeavor to support us throughout the year.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of pastoral support until later in the academic year, I wish I had sought it earlier. Serving as a well-being representative enabled me to connect further with staff members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Utilize the support available—there’s never too much assistance.

### Closing Thoughts

When I reflect on this past year, I realize the fears and worries I held prior to starting university were mostly unfounded. With the proper support from faculty and fellow students, I managed to overcome challenges and genuinely relish my time here. Most critically, I discovered that I was never alone in my difficulties.

University entails a substantial amount of stress—exams, deadlines, and academic expectations—but it also presents innumerable chances for development, camaraderie, and enjoyment. If you’re about to embark on your journey at Imperial, cherish every moment, reach out for support when necessary, and remember to savor the experience.
